on photoshop and related programs we lower brush opacity and sometimes use the smudge, burn, dodge . to create highlights, shadows and soft edges, a second way is a layer style set to shadow or highlights.

I don't use paint tool sai, or even a tablet for that matter, but this tutorial is a bit helpful.

well I'm sure it can be used in pretty much any art program, i just said sai because the pen tool in sai is different than pen tools in other programs!

thanks ^^ I can't do this with small scales (unless there aren't a lot lol) i can only do it with larger ones or i get extremely bored XD
